How Tax Filing Works For Teachers And Educators

Getting your return prepared at Wozny Tax Company is a straightforward four-step process designed to respect your time and reduce your stress.

Schedule Your Appointment

Call 1 (708) 479-1700 or use the online form to book your appointment. Let us know you are a teacher or educator when you schedule so we can prepare accordingly. In-person appointments are available at our Mokena office. Virtual appointments are available for educators who cannot come in.

Gather Your Documents (We Send You a Checklist First)

Before your appointment, we send you an educator-specific checklist covering every document type relevant to your situation. No guessing about what to bring. We cover W-2s, 1099s, coaching pay records, classroom expense receipts, and more. The full checklist is included further down this page.

We Prepare and Review Your Return (Typically 5 to 10 Business Days)

Our CPA-led team reviews your complete income picture, applies every deduction and credit your situation may support under federal and Illinois law, and prepares your return accurately. We review everything before presenting a draft so you are not surprised by anything.

Walk Through, Sign, and File

We walk you through your completed return in plain language, answer your questions, and e-file on your behalf. You receive copies of everything and a clear summary of what was filed and why.
"They made it so easy. Our taxes were done when we attended the appointment. They were professional and friendly." — Wozny Tax client

Common Educator Tax Situations We Help With

Teachers and school staff face tax scenarios that general preparers often overlook. Here is what we handle regularly for educators in Mokena and the surrounding south suburbs.

Federal Educator Expense Deduction

If you are a K–12 teacher, instructor, counselor, principal, or aide who works 900 or more hours per year in a qualified school, you may be eligible to deduct unreimbursed out-of-pocket classroom expenses from your federal return. The deduction for 2025 is up to $300. For 2026 and forward, under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the amount increases to $350 and a new unlimited itemized deduction option also becomes available. Starting in 2026, coaches and interscholastic sports administrators may also qualify.
Important: this deduction applies only to expenses that were not reimbursed by your school or district. Reimbursed expenses cannot be claimed.
Eligible expenses typically include books, supplies, equipment, computer hardware and software for classroom instruction, and qualifying professional development costs. Verify current-year limits and qualifying categories with our office before filing.

Illinois K–12 Instructional Materials and Supplies Tax Credit

Illinois offers a separate state-level tax credit for eligible K–12 educators who purchase instructional materials and supplies out of pocket for use in a qualified school. The credit is up to $500 per educator, or up to $1,000 if both spouses are eligible educators filing jointly.
This credit is claimed on Illinois Schedule 1299-C and is separate from the federal deduction. Many teachers either do not know this credit exists or assume the federal deduction covers it. It does not. Both can be claimed in the same year when eligible.

Multiple W-2s from Different Roles or Districts

If you receive separate W-2 forms from your main teaching position, a coaching role, a department chair stipend, a club sponsor payment, or a second district position, each employer withholds taxes independently. The combined income may push your household into a higher bracket than any single employer anticipated, which can result in a balance due at filing.
We review all W-2s together, calculate your actual tax position, and provide guidance on adjusting your W-4 withholding so next year does not bring a surprise.

Tutoring, Freelance Teaching, and Summer Job Income

If you earn income from private tutoring, online course instruction, educational consulting, summer employment, or any work where you receive a 1099-NEC or invoice clients directly, that income is reported differently than your school W-2. Self-employment income requires Schedule C preparation, may involve self-employment tax, and may require quarterly estimated payments if your expected tax obligation exceeds $1,000.
All income must be reported regardless of whether a 1099 was issued. We help you report it correctly, identify eligible business expense deductions against that income, and set up estimated payments if needed.

Student Loan Interest Deduction

If you are repaying qualified student loans, you may be eligible to deduct up to $2,500 in interest paid during the year, even if you take the standard deduction. This is an above-the-line deduction, meaning you do not need to itemize to claim it. Income phaseout limits apply.
Bring your Form 1098-E from each loan servicer to your appointment. If you have loans with multiple servicers, you may receive more than one form.

Education Credits for Graduate Coursework

Educators pursuing graduate degrees, additional endorsements, or continuing education may be eligible for the Lifetime Learning Credit. The credit is up to $2,000 per return (20 percent of up to $10,000 in qualifying expenses). Income limits apply, and you cannot claim the same expenses for both an education credit and the educator expense deduction in the same year.
Bring your Form 1098-T from your educational institution and records of any scholarships, grants, or employer tuition reimbursement you received.

403(b), 457(b), and TRS Pension Contributions

Most Illinois public school educators contribute to the Teachers' Retirement System of Illinois, and many also make voluntary contributions to a 403(b) or 457(b) plan. Pre-tax contributions to voluntary plans reduce your taxable income and appear in Box 12 of your W-2. Lower-income educators may also be eligible for the Saver's Credit.
We review your W-2 Box 12 entries and your year-end plan statements to make sure your contributions are reflected accurately in your return.

Married Couples Where Both Spouses Are Educators

If both spouses are eligible K–12 educators, each can claim the federal educator expense deduction on a joint return, up to the annual per-person limit. The Illinois educator credit may be claimed up to $1,000 jointly. We review both spouses' situations together to make sure nothing is missed and that the most favorable filing approach is applied.
